Black Momtrepreneurs

“My mother taught me very early to believe I could achieve any accomplishment I wanted to.” Wilma Rudolph

My oldest son was 2 years old when I was first introduced to entrepreneurship.

I worked four jobs at once to support us – cashier at a toy store, buffet filler at a mongolian style restaurant, bank teller, and receptionist through a temp service – and I had no time-freedom.

My home was dilapidated, falling apart and unsafe. I had made it barely livable with school money before moving in, putting me in further debt. But it was ours.

I was doing what everyone around me told me that I should do in order to be successful.

I realized that money could always be made, but I could never get back the time that I lost where others were watching my children grow up for me and telling me about it later.

I was excited to start working for myself so that I could stay home with my son and still make ends meet.

This was easier said than done!

Opportunity after opportunity began coming my way once I opened my mind toward working for myself, but I faced so many challenges getting a business up and running.

If you’re anything like me and you’ve ever:

  • Wanted to work for yourself…
  • Struggled with getting traffic to products to make sales…
  • Struggled with the confidence you needed to get ahead in your own business…
  • Racked your brain trying to create websites…
  • Dished out thousands of dollars in marketing just to be without results…
  • Struggled with delegating tasks to competent help…

Or anything else that has made you feel held back in your progress toward greater success, then…

    hi Tamara
I used to be self-employed and it did occupy all my time! as I also had a regular job…but you are right if you have your own business, it never stops. As with a regular job it does not stop when you get home. However, that being said, most of my regular jobs would also not stop when I got home…And yes it does take a toll on you. For example, it is Saturday and I am exchanging emails with my boss. So one of my goals is to find a better balance between work and life. True, I do not have much of a personal life but the one that I have, I want to be able to enjoy! Doing things I enjoy such as working on my site. Yes that is also work but more and more readers come to visit it and I enjoy the interactions with them.

      Hi Emily,
Somehow it just feels a lot more comfortable for your own business to occupy your time than it does when you’re working (unless you really really love your job!). And it all does depend on the type of job you have. Some jobs do not stop when you come home, like you pointed out. It is certainly challenging to find that balance between your work and home life. You are in charge of the life you want to create for yourself. Do what is comfortable for you and no one can tell you that it is right or wrong.
